City Councilmember Melvin Carter, Minnesota Twins Community Relations Director Bryan Donaldson, Deputy Parks and Recreation Director Kathy Korum and Saint Paul coaching legend Billy Peterson celebrated the grand opening of the new youth athletic baseball field at Dunning Recreation Center on Saturday, May 22. The new field was made possible by $250,000 in grants, half coming from Major League Baseball's Tomorrow Fund Grant and the other money secured by Friends of Saint Paul Baseball.
The new youth baseball field features a new lighting system, in-ground irrigation system, fencing, scoreboard, bleachers and upgraded sod. Surrounding the new field are several trees, picnic tables and new pavilion.
Billy Peterson is a legend in City of Saint Paul Parks and Recreation athletics, having coached and mentored several local sports figures who have gone on to have tremendous national careers including Major League Baseball Hall of Famers Dave Winfield and Paul Molitor. Billy has contributed to the development of Saint Paul youth athletics for more than five decades and continues to volunteer throughout the Parks and Recreation system.
