Judging Criteria
The following criteria are used when judging nominated gardens. Not all criteria are used for each judging category, but this is a good example of what judges are looking for when they visit a nominated garden.

Plant Selection
- Plant material is appropriate to the setting
- Plant materials are used in a unique or creative manner
Design
- Planting compliments the architecture/environment
- Planting supports the public use of the space (does not hinder traffic patterns, provides shade and seating, etc.)
- Plant materials are used in a unique or creative manner
- The area is accessible for handicapped persons
- Planting has design continuity
- External barrier is well expressed
Visual Impact
- Planting has a unique or interesting feature used to its full impact
- Planting is welcoming and has an overall positive feel
- Planting has multi-seasonal interest
Maintenance
- Planting is well maintained; weeded, deadheaded and watered
- Hardscaping is maintained; fresh paint, not chipped or worn excessively
- If Art in the Garden is not the chosen judging category, art work will be judged as hardscaping
Environmental Award
- Planting is sustainable and conserves inputs
- Planting is beneficial to wildlife
