Flexibility is defined as the capacity to move a joint through its full range of motion. It is important to maintain a reasonable amount of flexibility for efficient movement. For example, if muscles in the back of the thigh (hamstrings) are tight, you may not be able to take a full length step while walking or jogging.
Flexibility may also be important in decreasing the chances of injuring muscles and in preventing low back pain.
Assessment of flexibility is difficult because the flexibility of each joint may be different.
