In February 2009, the City Council passed an interim ordinance that specified a set of design standards to be used in the construction of single- and two-family residential dwellings.

The Planning Commission heard community input on the proposed permanent design standards ordinance during two public hearings held on May 22, 2009 and June 5, 2009.  The Neighborhood Planning Committee of the Planning Commission finished its review of the public testimony and recommended to the Planning Commission a revised design standards ordinance on October 16, 2009.  The Planning Commission approved and recommended to the City Council this revised design standards ordinance, which the Council considered at a public hearing on December 16, 2009.  The City Council approved the design standards ordinance on December 23, 2009.
