Man Wanted for Assault, Attempted Robbery
June 21, 2011

Saint Paul Police investigators are asking for the public’s help to identify a man who assaulted a store clerk during an attempted armed robbery of a convenience store.  The incident was captured on surveillance video.

At 10:00 PM on June 8th a clerk at the AA Avenue Grocery, 682 Selby Avenue, was locking the front door of the business at closing time when a man wearing a mask suddenly forced open the door and ran into the business.  The man displayed a handgun, demanded money from the clerk, and chased him toward the back of the store.

The man then began assaulting the clerk as they fought over the handgun.  While fighting, the clerk pulled off the man’s mask.  The clerk was also able to grab a can of food from a store shelf and strike the man on the head.

The man continued punching the store clerk as the two men moved toward the front of the store where the clerk was finally able to get the man out of the store.  He locked the front door and called police.

The clerk had cuts and scrapes on his head, hands and knees but did not require medical attention.

The suspect is described as a black male, 18-20 years of age, 5’7”-5’9”, medium build with short curly hair.  He was wearing a black jacket or sweatshirt with a hood, blue jeans and a black mask.
