Edgcumbe Bridge Replacement - Construction Update for March 2013

This bridge is the means for access from Edgcumbe Road to Hamline Avenue and provides pedestrian
access to and from Highland Park.

After several years of restricted vehicle use, the old bridge was closed to traffic in November of 2010.
Removals started in the fall of 2012.

The anticipated timeline for completion is to re-open Edgcumbe Road by August 1, 2013.
Minor work items, including landscaping, will continue into the Fall of 2013.

The original structure was removed in October and November of 2012.

After many decades of use and weather exposure, the reinforced concrete deck, railings,
and substructure were extensively deteriorated.

Crews crushed concrete and separated reinforcing steel on-site, to be recycled and reused
for other construction projects.

In November, cylindrical steel piles were driven to
underlying bedrock.

These piles will support the new bridge structure.

In January, crews completed pouring the new
concrete abutments and wingwalls.

Precast concrete bridge beams will be brought
to the site and set in the Spring of 2013.

Looking ahead, the new bridge deck will be poured in the summer 2013.

A new concrete baluster railing was designed especially for this bridge
to resemble the aesthetics of the original structure.

Four ornamental lanterns will be placed at the four bridge corners
and four more will be placed upon free-standing pillars on the roadway approaches.
