A dynamic speed display sign is a sign on the side of the road that dynamically shows the speed of a vehicle as it is passing by. The sign will flash and show the speed if a vehicle is going over the speed limit and will be steady if the vehicle is going at or under the speed limit. The actual posted speed limit is displayed on a sign below the dynamic speed display sign.

Studies and experience have shown that dynamic speed display signs reduce traffic speeds and increase speed limit compliance. For this reason, the City of St. Paul has installed permanent signs at critical points for speed reduction throughout the City.
We use permanent display signs at locations where roadway features influence driver speed such as bridges and grade changes or transition zones where speeds are reduced from highway speeds.  Temporary signs are used to remind drivers of the legal speed limit, which is 30 miles per hour unless otherwise posted.
