SAINT PAUL – Mayor Coleman announced today that he has appointed Richard Carlbom as his new Communications Director. Carlbom will step into a position previously held by Bob Hume, who was appointed as Senior Communications Advisor to Governor Dayton. Carlbom previously served as Mayor of Saint Joseph, MN and as Campaign Manager to Congressman Tim Walz. He will assume his duties as Communications Director on February 7.
“With incredible drive and political expertise, Richard will be an invaluable asset to my office in the coming years. From Central Corridor to Promise Neighborhoods, we are seeing exciting growth and changes in Saint Paul, and I know Richard is the right person to help take that work to the next level,” Mayor Chris Coleman said.
“Mayor Coleman has proven himself to be a strong leader with a remarkable vision for Saint Paul and it is an honor to join his administration. I look forward to rolling up my sleeves and getting to work on behalf of Saint Paul residents, doing my part to further this city as a great place to work, live and play,” Richard Carlbom said.
Carlbom will bring an extensive background in government and outreach to his work as Communications Director. While working as Campaign Manager for Congressman Walz, Carlbom focused on communications, research, outreach, finance and budget.
After earning a degree in political science from Saint John’s University, Carlbom was elected Mayor of Saint Joseph, MN in 2004. During his time in office, the city successfully implemented a strategic plan and Carlbom focused his efforts on community development. In addition, he has also held positions as Regional Field Director for the Minnesota DFL Party and as an administrator at Saint John’s University.
