Special Operations

Saint Paul Fire Department Special Operations team members represent a group of Firefighters that, in addition to their primary firefighting duties, train to mitigate challenging situations across technical and dangerous rescue environments. The Training Division facilitates initial and recertification training expectations for these team members.

The fire suppression division is responsible for fire and emergency response for the City of Saint Paul and contracted areas. Three shifts are supervised by deputy chiefs who oversee 136 uniformed fire suppression personnel. Each shift includes three district chiefs and 26 fire companies. 11 companies staff paramedic rigs for emergency medical response. Specialty units include:

  • Two rescue boats that pump water
  • An air boat
  • State chemical assessment team and vehicle
  • State emergency response team and vehicle
  • State collapse team and vehicle
  • 2 decontamination trailers

The Saint Paul Fire Training Division facilities are available for use by outside agencies for Fire Suppression, Emergency Medical Services and specialized training activities.  Training options include Class A fire behavior prop, live structural fire training, high rise fire training, hazmat response, technical rescue response, structural collapse response, natural gas fires, auto extrication, and other customized activities.
