Lilydale Regional Park Brickyard Area

Construction Updates:

  • FALL 2019 & SUMMER 2020:
    - Construction work was complete at the end of October, 2019. 
    - Great River Greening is working to further establish vegetation throughout the site.
  • WINTER / SPRING 2019:
    - Construction work is on-hold for the season. 
    - Water Street and access to Brickyard Trail parking lot remains closed due to flooding.
    - Crews will resume work on-site Summer 2019.
    - Erosion control blanket over disposal area, finish site stream channel restoration work.
    - Installation of final plantings on upper slope and disposal area.
    - Restoration of road access trail.
    - Grading of disposal site area and stream channel restoration work.
    - Preparation for final plantings, seeding, and complete erosion control on upper slope
    - Installation of fencing in upper slope area
    - Crews will be completing the buttress and armored toe work.
    - Preparation for final plantings, seeding, and complete erosion control on upper slope
    - Begin excavation and processing of material for stream channel restoration
    - Erosion control blanket and seeding establishment continue at the top of the slope.
    - Crews work to complete the second half of the buttress and armored toe. 
    - Erosion control blanket and seeding establishment begin at the top of the slope.
    - Crews begin laying the turf reinforcement mat on face of slope above buttress.
    - Grading work continues in the disposal site. 
    - Grading work continues above the buttress and in disposal area. 
    - Crews begin to spread topsoil in some areas to prepare for seeding.
    - Note: Construction site and Brickyard Trail remains CLOSED.  Heavy equipment may be visible.
  • WEEK OF JULY 30:
    - Tree removal work will occur at the top of the slope starting July 31.
    - Crews will begin flattening the slope and placing soil above the buttress.
    - Note: Construction site and Brickyard Trail remains CLOSED.  Heavy equipment may be visible.
  • WEEK OF JULY 23:
    - Placement of the seepage filter blanket continues to build up and stabilize the slope.
    - Contractor plans to work with the excavator to move material down from the scarp to the disposal area. 
    - Note: Heavy construction equipment may be visible as crews work their way up the North Knob.
    - Crews have been working up the North Knob slope to areas where seepage is located
    - Construction work includes directing water and building up areas for equipment to access the slope
    - Placement of the seepage filter blanket has begun
    - Construction crews have installed erosion control measures throughout the site
    - Grading and earthwork has begun as crews begin making an access path up to the North Knob
    - A series of check dams have been installed along the ravine for sediment
    - Heavy construction equipment may be visible on the site as crews move soil, clear debris, and stabilize the slope.

  • WEEK OF JUNE 23:
    - Construction is anticipated to begin the week of June 25th.  Once construction begins, the contractor anticipates the project to take about 45 days, depending on weather and site conditions.
    - Clearing and grubbing of vegetation will begin within the project limits Monday, June 25th
    - Water Street will be closed June 25th-29th due to high water levels in the area.  Road closure map and additional information can be found here
  • US SiteWork has been awarded the contract for stabilization of the North Knob Lilydale Regional Park.
  • Brickyard Trail and parking lot will remain closed during construction

Status of the Brickyard Area

  • A community meeting was held with updates on the stabilization project on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at 6:30 PM - 8 PM at Baker Recreation Center, 209 Page St W, Saint Paul, MN 55107.  View Lilydale North Knob Stabilization Meeting Presentation.
  • The stormwater management and slope-stability study has been completed (see documents posted under "Stormwater Management and Slope-Stability Study" below).
  • The Brickyard area remains closed while a series of action steps can be taken in response to a series of recommendations outlined in the study.
  • The action steps will result in a portion of the Brickyard and Brickyard Trail being able to reopen in the future.
  • Based on the findings of the study, ice climbing permits will no longer be issued in the Brickyard and access to various areas of the Brickyard will now be restricted.
  • Requests for fossil hunting permits are not being accepted at this time. No fossil hunting allowed as fossil grounds are currently closed. Please check the Parks and Recreation permits page for updates, or call the park permit office at 651-632-5111.
