Pillar 6: Officer Wellness and Safety

6.3.1 The U.S. Department of Justice should fund additional research into the efficacy of limiting the total number of hours an officer should work within a 24–48-hour period, including special findings on the maximum number of hours an officer should work in a high risk or high stress environment (e.g., public demonstrations or emergency situations).

SPPD is committed to officer safety and wellness

The Saint Paul Police Department limits through policy the number of hours an officer can work in an off-duty capacity. That policy specifically states:

Officers may not spend more than 24 hours per week in off-duty employment, whether working for others or self-employed. These 24 hours do not include department-authorized overtime.

The department manages deployment in high-risk and high-stress environments on a case-by-case basis and is continually evaluating shift length for special deployments. The department is currently studying its practices for long-term deployments.
