The Black Dog is pleased to host a monthly series...anchored by the duo of Dean Magraw, guitar and Davu Seru, percussion; the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00pm-9:00pm.

"Expect intimate and adventurous music as guitar maestro Dean Magraw and avant jazz drummerDavu Seru kick off a new monthly series in St. Paul's Lowertown called "First Tuesdays at the Dog." Magraw's liable to play anything from Coltrane to Irish jigs, but improvisation should be the main bill of fare, since Seru is known for his work with such intrepid artists as Milo Fine and George Cartwright."   Tom Surowicz, StarTrib 7/29/11

“If the date is less than 8, on a Tuesday night, from 7-9, do it at the Dog with Davu & Dino…” featuring the uber musical creative stylings of percussionist Davu Seru w/Dean on guitar and (probably) electric sitar…

ABOUT DAVU SERU

Minneapolis native Davu Seru (b. 1978) is known internationally as a free jazz drummer but performs regularly in jazz, rock and avant-garde improvised music. His style is perhaps most striking for its attending to sound, silence and melodic line as much it does rhythmic pattern—and as a skilled ensemble player he is known for his “big ears.” In the past fifteen years Davu has performed and recorded with musicians such as Milo FineAndrew Lafkas,Jaron ChildsCharles Gillett, Elliot Fine, Paul MetzgerJack WrightElaine EvansAnthony CoxDean Granros,Douglas R. EwartDean MagrawWendy UltanEvan ParkerFred Lonberg-Holm, Adam Linz, Luke Polipnick,George CartwrightStefan KacJames BuckleyTaylor Ho BynumJim Baker, Donald Washington, Robbie Lynn HunsingerTatsu AokiDavid BoykinNicole Mitchell,Harrison BankheadRafael Toral, and the band Take Acre. Beside any number of spontaneous ad-hoc groupings, he currently works in a trio with French clarinetist Catherine Delaunay and French bassist Guillaume Seguron, the bands Click Song (with Marc Anderson and pick-up band), KCOB Trio (with Casey O’Brien and Nathan Hanson),Merciless Ghost (with George Cartwright and Josh Granowski), the desert-blues inspired Body Omara (withJoseph Damman and Tom Reichert), and is co-leader withMankwe Ndosi of The Mother of Masks, an improvising ensemble of poets, storytellers, activists and musicians.

He has received awards from the American Composers Forum, the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council and has received commissions from the Zeitgeist Ensemble andWalker Art Center. And his work as a PhD scholar of African and African American literature and culture no doubt colors his musical and artistic sensibilities.

He calls himself a jazz musician—a moniker which he feels is worth arguing over (that is, until we’ve generally departed from using labels). He has a deep affection for jazz, one which, he believes, is made even richer by his capricious race pride. He also believes that sincerity is heroic and improvisation is its ritual.

What else he would like to impart and by whatever means: life is suffering and it ain’t nobody’s fault but ours. We should laugh and often, even if not that deeply.
