Deadline set to apply for 2012 Sustainable Saint Paul Awards

SAINT PAUL – Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman is encouraging individuals, businesses and organizations to submit applications for the 2012 Sustainable Saint Paul Awards, which honor the work being done to protect and restore the environment in Saint Paul.

Nominations are due Friday, March 23, 2012.

“Over the past several years, we have taken deliberate steps to improve building efficiency, energy production, and our environment, making Saint Paul a national leader in environmental sustainability,” Mayor Coleman said. “I am proud that Saint Paul hosts these awards, recognizing inventive community leaders and organizations who are working to better our environment for decades to come, inspiring others to follow their example.”

Mayor Coleman also hired the city’s first sustainability director as well as environmental, energy, sustainable transportation, and water resources coordinators. He signed the U.S. Mayors’ Climate Protection Agreement soon after entering office and has invested millions of dollars to retrofit city buildings for energy efficiency and cost savings. Among these initiatives are solar installations on public buildings, electric car charging stations and electric cars as part of the city’s fleet.

Award categories include:

* Water Quality or Conservation

* Transportation Options

* Clean-up and Beautification

* Residential/Commercial Green Building Design

* Natural Resources Restoration

* Waste Reduction, Composting and Recycling

* Environmental Education and Awareness

* Green Products and Practices

* Youth Leadership (18 years and under)

* Sustainable City Staff Awards

* Exceptional Environmental Steward

Nomination forms are available through Saint Paul’s website at www.stpaul.gov. Click on Sustainable Saint Paul listed under City Projects. Judging will be conducted by members of Sustainable Saint Paul Working Group and others in the environmental community.

Email completed nomination forms and supporting materials to Kris Hageman () no later than Friday, March 23, or mail supporting materials to: 2010 Sustainable Saint Paul Awards, Environmental Coordinator, 1000 City Hall Annex, 25 W. 4th St. Saint Paul, MN 55102. Regular mail should be postmarked by March 23, 2012.

Winners will be contacted mid-April, 2012.

All winners will be promoted throughout the State of Minnesota via newspapers, broadcast media, and the Internet. Winners will be invited to participate in an awards ceremony with Mayor Coleman and the Saint Paul City Council on or around Earth Day, April 22. Each winner will receive a commemorative award and a framed certificate.
