Mayor Coleman re-appoints Fire Chief Butler
Butler re-appointed to six-year term leading the Saint Paul Fire Department
Today, Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman announced the re-appointment of Tim Butler as Saint Paul’s Fire Chief. Butler, first appointed in 2007, would serve a second six-year term.
“Having served six years as Saint Paul’s Fire Chief, Chief Butler has proven time after time that he is the best person to lead the Saint Paul Fire Department. His commitment to continuing the SPFD’s long tradition of providing great service to our residents is reflected in his work every day, and his accomplishments are many. I am delighted to re-appoint Tim as Chief.”
Chief Butler’s first term as Fire Chief has resulted in many accomplishments. In that time, the SPFD added super-medic units, which improved response times, increased fire engine availability, and created more effective and more efficient use of fire and EMS resources.
Chief Butler made crucial improvements to the department’s infrastructure, while spearheading public outreach efforts and the creation of Saint Paul’s nationally-renowned EMS Academy and Basic Life Support Unit. The Chief has also made strides to increase the diversity of fire department personnel.
“I am honored to be re-appointed Fire Chief,” Chief Butler said. “We have a lot to be proud of in the Saint Paul Fire Department, and many accomplishments to celebrate. I look forward to continuing our work on public engagement, increasing diversity, and providing quality service to Saint Paul’s residents. I’m looking forward to what we can accomplish in these next six years.”
A retired member of the U.S. Coast Guard and Reserves, Butler served in U.S. military contingency operations in Grenada, Europe, Iraqi Air Operations, and mobilization for the September 11, 2001 attacks and Operation Enduring Freedom. He also served as a liaison officer for the U.S. military Crisis Action Team responding to the grounding of the Exxon Valdez and as Chief of Staff for the US Transportation Command’s Crisis Action Team. Prior to being appointed Fire Chief, Butler served as the City of Saint Paul’s first Director of Emergency Management.
The Saint Paul City Council is expected to vote on re-confirming Chief Butler at their August 7, 2013 City Council meeting. Chief Butler’s subsequent term would begin November 24, 2013.
