A man is dead and investigators with the Saint Paul Police Department are looking for the person responsible after an early morning shooting on New Year’s Day.

Officers were dispatched to a bar on the 900 block of University Avenue after callers reported shots fired at about 2 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1.

When they arrived a short time later, officers found a gravely injured adult male sitting in the driver’s seat of a vehicle. He appeared to have been shot. St. Paul Fire medics were summoned to the scene, but there was nothing they could do to help the victim.

He was pronounced dead without being transported to the hospital.

As of Wednesday morning, nobody had been arrested and no suspect information was available. The department’s Forensic Services Unit is processing the scene for evidence and investigators with the Homicide Unit are interviewing potential witnesses, trying to determine what led to the shooting and who is responsible.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 651-266-5650.

The Ramsey County medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to positively identify the victim and determine his exact cause of death. This information, along with any updates on the case, will be released on the Saint Paul Police Department Twitter account, @sppdmn.

This is the first homicide of 2020 in Saint Paul.
