Public Works to hold community open houses in January on Como Avenue Trail and Johnson Parkway Trail projects

SAINT PAUL (Jan. 7, 2019)– Saint Paul’s Grand Round, a 27-mile scenic bike and pedestrian parkway that connects several city parks and neighborhoods, will undergo two large construction projects in 2020 to improve walking and biking facilities in Saint Paul. The City of Saint Paul and Ramsey County are planning to implement trail, sidewalk and bikeway improvements along Como Avenue and Johnson Parkway. The concept of the Saint Paul Grand Round was designed more than 100 years ago by H.S. Cleveland.

“These projects are exciting because they will complete major portions of the Saint Paul Grand Round,” said Kathy Lantry, Director of Saint Paul Public Works. “This allows residents and visitors to get from one neighborhood to another – or around the entire city – with an off-street trail. It’s great for all pedestrians and cyclists!”

The Como Avenue Trail is a 1.6-mile stretch between Raymond Avenue and Hamline Avenue. This segment of Saint Paul’s Grand Round will improve walking and biking connections to Como Park, the University of Minnesota’s Saint Paul campus, the State Fairgrounds, residential neighborhoods, and transit stops.

The Johnson Parkway Trail project consists of constructing a 2-mile bike and pedestrian trail along the east side of Johnson Parkway from Burns Avenue to Phalen Boulevard.  This trail will greatly improve the comfort and safety of walking and biking along Johnson Parkway, eliminating a one-mile gap in walking facilities while providing direct connections to Indian Mounds and Phalen Regional Parks.

Saint Paul Public Works will hold open houses in January to provide project information, to allow the community to comment on the projects, and to answer questions. Residents, businesses, property owners, and those who walk, bike, and drive near these projects are encouraged to attend the open house to learn about the future of these important corridors.
