Project Details
Description
The original water main on Charles Avenue and Sherburne Avenue is unlined cast iron installed between 1910 and 1914. As unlined pipes age, mineral deposits collect inside the pipes which can decrease water volume and hinder flow for fighting fires. Such deposits can also affect water quality. Water main cleaning and lining is a method of pipe rehabilitation that is used when water mains are structurally sound but suffer from such corrosion and mineral deposits. The pipes will be cleaned with a tool that scrapes off internal mineral deposits. Then the pipe will be sprayed with a thin layer of cement mortar. This will increase flow capacity in the water main and provide a protective barrier against internal corrosion.
SPRWS will be hiring a contractor to clean and line the existing 6" cast iron water main on Charles and Sherburne. SPRWS crews will be performing all excavation and restoration. The scope of the project is as follows:
- Clean and line approximately 2,500 feet of 6" cast iron water main on Charles Avenue
- Clean and line approximately 2,500 feet of 6" cast iron water main on Sherburne Avenue
- Replace necessary valves and hydrants in the project area
- Repair and restore any areas disturbed by project activities
Location
Charles Avenue and Sherburne Avenue from Hamline Avenue to Lexington Parkway
Lead Service Replacement
Lead service lines were primarily installed in the City of St. Paul from late 1880’s to the late 1920’s. For 25 years Saint Paul Regional Water Services (SPRWS) has been replacing lead water service lines within the street right-of-way to reduce the possibility of lead exposure.
Private Lead Service Line Replacements: Customers in this project area who have a private lead service line are eligible to have it replaced at no cost as part of the new Lead Free SPRWS program. You should have received a letter with instructions on next steps if you qualify. To learn more visit our lead page.
In anticipation of an upcoming main replacement project, SPRWS will be replacing all existing lead services within the street right-of way with copper pipe. This project is completely funded by SPRWS with no charge to the property owner.
