Joyce Kilmer Memorial Fireplace

Overview

The Joyce Kilmer Memorial Fireplace, also known as the Dutch Ovens, was built in 1936 by the members of the Joyce Kilmer Post of the American Legion. Superintendant LaMont Kaufman was a member of the post and with Fred Truax, directed the erection of the memorial. For a number of years, the fireplace experienced neglect and vandalism. Recently, the City of Saint Paul Department of Parks and Recreation was awarded a Legacy Grant for the restoration of the fireplace. A rededication ceremony for the 75 anniversary is planned for the spring of 2011.
