Mayor Carter Declares Sunisa Lee Day
in the City of Saint Paul

SAINT PAUL, MN -- Mayor Melvin Carter has declared tomorrow, Friday, July 30th, 2021 as Sunisa Lee Day in the City of Saint Paul in honor of 18-year-old Saint Paul native Sunisa Lee who has won an Olympic gold medal in the Tokyo 2020 women’s artistic individual all-around gymnastics competition. 

The announcement comes as Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan announced they have declared tomorrow Sunisa Lee Day in the State of Minnesota. 

SUNISA LEE DAY PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, 18-year old Sunisa “Suni” Lee was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota on March 9th, 2003, where she still resides with her six siblings, Shyenne, Jonah, Evionn, Lucky, and Noah along with her parents, Yeev Thoj and John Lee, who came to Minnesota as refugees from Laos alongside thousands of members of our Hmong American community who continue to call our community home; and  

WHEREAS, Sunisa started gymnastics when she was just 6 years old at the Midwest Gymnastics Center in Little Canada, Minnesota just north of the City of Saint Paul where she still trains to this day; and  

WHEREAS, for the past 12 years, Sunisa has continued to grow as a gymnast, demonstrating incredible skills, drive, and commitment leading to her competing across the country, and around the world; and  

WHEREAS, as a member of the Tokyo 2020 United States Women’s Gymnastic Olympic Team, Sunisa is the first Hmong American Olympian; and  

WHEREAS, following her incredible performance which helped our U.S. Women’s Gymnastic Team win a silver medal in the women’s artistic team all-around final, today, we celebrate Sunisa’s Olympic Gold Medal in the Tokyo 2020 women’s artistic individual all-around gymnastics competition; and  

WHEREAS, we join members of our Hmong American community, along with all those in Saint Paul, throughout the state of Minnesota, across our nation, and around the world in celebrating Sunisa Lee, and in thanking her for inspiring all of us. 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Melvin Carter, Mayor of the City of Saint Paul, do hereby proclaim Friday, July 30th, 2021 to be:  

Sunisa Lee Day 
in the City of Saint Paul
