Just before 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, Saint Paul police were called to the 1400 block of Minnehaha Avenue East on a report of a shooting.

When officers arrived on scene they did not locate a victim, but were told by witnesses that someone who had been shot was taken away from the scene in a private vehicle. A short time later, an adult male arrived at Regions Hospital with apparent gunshot injuries to his upper torso. Unfortunately, life-saving measures were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A crime scene was secured and will be processed by the Saint Paul Police Department Forensic Services Unit. A search of the area for evidence and possible suspects was conducted.

At approximately 10 p.m. Saint Paul officers searching the neighborhood came upon an adult male on the 1400 block of 6th Street East who matched the description of the suspect from the shooting. When they attempted to stop this male, he fled from them on foot.

Officers lost sight of him as he rounded the corner of a home. They then heard a gunshot and subsequently found him down on the ground suffering from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officers rendered aid and called for Saint Paul Fire Paramedics to respond. This male was transported to Regions Hospital and treated for a non-life-threatening injury. A handgun was found on scene.

Investigators will be working with the Ramsey County Medical examiner to positively identify the deceased victim and determine his exact cause of death. This is an active investigation and no further information is currently available.  Updates will be provided on the Saint Paul Police Department Twitter account @sppdmn.

This is the fourth homicide of 2019.
