General FAQs

Why Youth Employment Matters

Since 2000, the number of 16-to 19-year-olds working over the summer has declined by 40 percent. These diminished opportunities for youth employment did not impact all communities equally. As the New York Times reports, “the higher a household’s income, the more likely a teenager is to get a job.” Unemployment rates are disproportionately high for low-income youth, youth living in cities, and youth of color, the very populations who benefit most from early work experience. Youth employment is linked to important outcomes for youth, including increased graduation and college attendance rates, and higher earnings in adulthood.
