Last Friday evening, President Trump announced plans to terminate Temporary Protected Status for Somali residents living in Minnesota. On Monday, November 24, 2025, the Trump administration also announced the termination of TPS for Burma (Myanmar). This TPS status will expire for the roughly 4,000 Burmese (Myanmarese) nationals benefitting from it on January 26, 2026.

The City of Saint Paul recognizes the important positive contributions our immigrant and refugee communities make, including the contributions made by those individuals holding TPS status. The City works to ensure people have access to information to understand immigration related developments and obtain assistance including through the City Attorney’s Immigrant and Refugee Program. For more information, please view the TPS fact sheet.

If you are worried about what the recent TPS announcements may mean for you, you must speak to a lawyer experienced in immigration law. You may be able to speak with a nonprofit legal service provider with free immigration lawyers on staff so that people can learn how immigration developments impact them. Here is a brief list of nonprofit legal service providers: Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota; The Advocates for Human Rights; and, Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid.
