The Saint Paul Police Department has launched a homicide investigation after a man was found dead inside his West Seventh Neighborhood home Monday, April 15.

Officers responded to a report of an assault at a house on the 1700 block of Benson Avenue just before 5 p.m. When they arrived, they found Matthew Richard Schramm, 33, inside and unresponsive. They immediately called for Saint Paul Fire, who pronounced Schramm dead at the scene.

Investigators with the police department’s Homicide Unit responded to the scene to interview people who knew the deceased. They also brought the 911 caller to police headquarters for questioning. Throughout the night, the Forensic Services Unit processed the scene for evidence and any information that could tell them what Schramm was doing prior to his death and how he died.

Today, the Ramsey County medical examiner conducted an autopsy on the victim, the results of which have not been finalized. However, the case is being investigated as a homicide, the seventh of the year in the city.

This is an open and ongoing investigation and no further information is currently available. Any additional updates on the case will be released on the police department’s Twitter account, @sppdmn.
