Saint Paul police are investigating after an assault at a downtown bar Saturday night left a man dead.

Several 911 callers reported an assault with a person down at about 11:35 p.m. Saturday, April 17 at a bar and restaurant on the 300 block of Washington Street. Officers and St. Paul Fire medics responded and found a 48-year-old man suffering from an apparent head injury lying on the pavement.  

The victim was transported to Regions, where he was initially reported to be in critical condition. He died from his injuries at about 3 p.m. Sunday, April 18.

Witnesses told officers that a physical confrontation had occurred on the bar’s front steps, during which the victim fell and hit his head. Investigators have identified the other man involved in the incident, who left the scene Saturday night.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine an exact cause of death. As of Sunday afternoon, no arrests have been made, but the investigation remains open and active.
