Saint Paul police are investigating a shooting that occurred on the 600 block of Cook Avenue that left a person injured Tuesday April 16.

At approximately 10 a.m., Saint Paul officers were on patrol when they attempted to stop a stolen vehicle near the intersection of Forest Street and Case Avenue East. The vehicle fled from them at a high rate of speed and officers lost sight of it. A short time later, officers were alerted to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Payne Avenue and Jenks Avenue East involving the stolen vehicle and another car.

Officers converged on the area and were told by witnesses that more than one person fled on foot from the suspect vehicle. One of those suspects ran into a neighborhood to the north and east of the scene of the crash. Officers converged on the area and were preparing to search for the suspect when they heard several gunshots.

Officers responded to the area from which the shots were heard and located an adult male suffering from gunshot injuries; he was lying in the yard of a home on the 600 block of Cook Ave East. Another adult male armed with a handgun was also found with the suspect. The man identified himself as the homeowner. He was cooperative with officers and the scene was secured.

Saint Paul Fire Paramedics responded and transported the adult male with non-life threatening gunshot injuries to Regions Hospital. This male was identified as the driver of the stolen vehicle involved in the pursuit and was also wanted by Saint Paul investigators in relation to a separate auto theft investigation.

The homeowner was transported to Saint Paul Police headquarters to be interviewed by investigators, who are working to determine what led to the shooting. The department’s forensics unit will be processing the scene.

If any updates are available on this case, they will be released on the Saint Paul Police Department Twitter account, @sppdmn.
