After making a valid arrest, the arresting officer(s) may undertake a search of the arrested party without a warrant. This warrantless search allows a full search of the arrestees person and also may extend into an area under the immediate control of the suspect into which s/he may reach for a possible weapon. It is limited, however to the area in which the suspect may reach or lunge. (See Chimel v. California 395 U.S. 752 (1969))
