Forensic Services Unit (FSU) personnel recovering property/evidence at the scene of an offense or incident will be required to enter property into the Evidence Manager.

The FSU is not to be used for general storage purposes and only evidence that is being processed by the FSU is to be held in the FSU evidence storage room. Generally, all evidence should be returned to the property room after examinations are completed by the FSU. The exception to this would be latent lifts, casts or lifts of impression evidence, and known impressions that will be retained in the FSU. Evidence collected initially by FSU that is in need of immediate processing may initially be stored in the FSU but should be submitted to the property room when processing is completed. Any additional evidence generated as a result of lab analysis will be noted as new evidence in the Evidence Manager and stored according to policy.

When evidence is completely consumed in analysis or destroyed the FSU personnel will enter “destroyed” or “consumed in analysis” in the notes section of the Evidence Manager entry.

If examination of evidence is required, the investigator assigned to the case must request the examination according to 439.09.
