Western Avenue Bikeway

What is Proposed?

Saint Paul Public Works is planning to resurface Western Avenue between Como Avenue and Front Avenue in 2018. The Saint Paul Bicycle Plan recommends in-street separated lanes within the project corridor, and Public Works is proposing to install bike lanes when the street is resurfaced.

Purpose

Adding bike lanes to Western Avenue between Como Avenue and Front Avenue will make the street a safer and more comfortable place to ride a bike. Bike lanes will  encourage more predictable riding behavior by providing a dedicated place to ride on the street outside of the motorized travel lane. The proposed bike lanes would connect to existing bike lanes on Como Avenue and Western Avenue south of the project limits.

Changes to On-Street Parking

There is currently parking on both sides of Western Avenue at many locations throughout the corridor. To add bike lanes and maintain appropriate lane widths, parking removal is required on one side of the roadway. Parking removal was originally proposed for the west side of Western between Front Avenue and Larch Street. In response to community feedback, Public Works is changing the recommendation for parking removal from the west side of Western Avenue between Front Avenue and Larch Street, to the east side of Western Avenue. Removing parking on the east side of the street instead of the west side presents the opportunity to maintain ten additional on-street parking spaces, maximizing available parking capacity between Larch and Front avenues. To accommodate a lane shift, parking removal is also proposed on the west side of Western Avenue for one block between Larch and Atwater streets. Parking surveys were performed along the corridor to measure parking demand, and the data collected will be presented at the July 23rd project meeting.
