SPRWS has planned the replacement of several sections of galvanized iron water main. See the map linked above for the full list of galvanized iron water main replacement projects.
Galvanized iron pipes were commonly installed between the 1880s and 1960s as an alternative to lead pipes for water supply. However, decades of exposure to water has caused these pipes to corrode and rust on the inside. This can lead to restricted water flow and reduced water pressure. Because of this, SPRWS has a commitment to remove galvanized iron pipes from our system to reduce potential interruptions in water service.
