Mayor Kaohly Her today announced the nomination of Assistant Chief Jeramiah Melquist to serve as the next chief of the Saint Paul Fire Department. Assistant Chief Melquist brings more than 26 years of experience with the department and a proven record of leadership across emergency response, department operations, and labor relations.

“Assistant Chief Melquist has really stepped up this past year, not only for this department, but to help us navigate some of the biggest challenges we face as a city,” said Mayor Her. “He is the consummate team player and an inclusive leader who inspires those around him to do their best. AC Melquist is committed to continuous improvement in everything he does, and it shows. With his experience, drive, and dedication, he is exceptionally well-suited for this role. Anyone who knows him knows how kind and caring he is, not just toward his staff, but toward everyone he encounters, on and off duty, across the City of Saint Paul."

Melquist has served as Assistant Chief of Operations since 2023. In that role, he oversees daily operations for Minnesota’s largest fire department and supervises more than 500 personnel. His previous positions include Assistant Chief of Emergency Medical Services, Deputy Chief, District Chief, Fire Captain, and Fire Equipment Operator.

Throughout his career, Assistant Chief Melquist has led efforts to strengthen department operations, improve efficiency, and build partnerships across city government and the community. He also serves as the department’s point of contact for specialized response teams, including hazardous materials response, technical rescue, and urban search and rescue.

“I’m honored by Mayor Her’s confidence and grateful for the opportunity to lead the department I’ve proudly served for over 26 years,” said Assistant Chief Jeramiah Melquist. “My commitment is simple: mission-driven and people-first. I’ll focus on supporting our members, strengthening community relationships, and earning the trust of every Saint Paul resident.”

Mayor Her also recognized Interim Fire Chief Gregory Duren II for his leadership throughout this transition.

“Chief Duren stepped up during a consequential period for our city,” said Mayor Her. “His leadership helped maintain continuity at the Fire Department as we transitioned to a new administration and responded to the challenges of Operation Metro Surge. I am grateful for his service and his commitment to the people of Saint Paul.”

In addition, Assistant Chief Melquist brings extensive experience working with organized labor. He spent 10 years as a union leader and chair officer with International Association of Firefighters Local 21 and served three years as Central District vice president of Minnesota Professional Firefighters. He is committed to fostering a workplace culture grounded in collaboration, equity, and professional development.

Assistant Chief Melquist holds a bachelor’s degree in Fire Science Administration and is pursuing a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership with a focus on Fire Rescue Executive Leadership.

The nomination, which is subject to City Council approval, will go before the Saint Paul City Council for a vote in the coming weeks.
