Saint Paul to Begin Work on Indian Mounds Regional Park Trail Reconstruction Project on Wednesday

Sections of Greenspace, Trails, and Mounds Boulevard to Temporarily Close

SAINT PAUL, MN – Saint Paul Parks and Recreation will begin a three-month trail reconstruction project at Indian Mounds Regional Park tomorrow, Wednesday, April 22. During the project, Saint Paul Parks and Recreation will close lanes or full sections of Mounds Boulevard to vehicle traffic.

These road closures are needed for the trail reconstruction project, but also allow pedestrians and bicyclists space to recreate while following social distancing guidelines at the regional park during construction. Sections of trails and greenspaces within the park will be closed to the public for safety reasons during the three phases of the project.

Before proceeding with design and construction, Saint Paul collaborated with the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council (MIAC), Tribal Historic Preservation Officers (THPOs) and the local community to instill an understanding of the sacred lands, and to establish a respectful and responsive preservation agenda.

To reduce the amount of disturbance on sacred lands, the trail alignment will follow the existing alignment and removals will be limited to the bituminous pavement while leaving the aggregate base in place. Saint Paul Parks and Recreation will also remove and restore the trail system surrounding the existing burial mounds.

See the tentative closure timelines below and visit www.stpaul.gov/IndianMoundsTrail for more information on the project.

Trails & greenspaces in these areas will be closed during the following construction phases:

  • April 22 - May 22: Phase 1 (Plum to Bates)
  • May 5 - June 12: Phase 2 (Bates to Burns)
  • May 19 - July 12: Phase 3 (Burns to Hwy 61)

Mounds Boulevard will be closed to vehicle traffic but open to pedestrians during these times:

  • April 22 - May 22: Plum Street to Bates Avenue – Eastbound lane will be closed. One-way westbound vehicle traffic only.
  • April 22 - June 12: Bates Avenue to Thorn – Full road closure to all vehicle traffic.
  • April 22 - June 12: Thorn to Burns Avenue – Eastbound lane will be closed. One-way westbound vehicle traffic only.
