Idling of department vehicles is prohibited except in the following circumstances:

  • When the vehicle is occupied in the course of law enforcement activities (e.g. monitoring traffic, surveillance, working stationary radar, writing reports, talking car to car, etc.)

  • When the driver is involved in an emergency incident (e.g. traffic stop, motorist assist, traffic accident, traffic direction, etc.)

  • To provide heating or cooling of the vehicle when occupied by a police canine.

  • In extreme weather (e.g. below zero, heavy snow, freezing rain, over 90 degrees, etc.) where leaving a squad running is necessary to provide uninterrupted service.

    Employees shall not leave unoccupied police vehicles idling in police parking lots or while on break or at PT.
