Assistant Chief of Operations
The Assistant Chief of Operations reports directly to the Fire Chief and directs all fire department operations, encompassing the Fire Suppression, Training Division, Hazardous Materials Response Teams, Water Operations, and Technical Rescues. Three deputy fire chiefs report directly to the Assistant Chief of Operations. Each deputy fire chief heads one of the three fire suppression platoons. The deputy fire chiefs are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Fire Suppression Division.
Our City exhibits a wide diversity of potential emergencies and cataclysm which are shaped by geography, climate, and to varying degrees by people. Our unified response to life and property menacing occurrences seeks to mitigate, to the greatest magnitude possible, individual and economic loss due to these emergencies.
Deputy Chiefs
The deputy chiefs plan, organize, implement, and directs the activities of a division which provide:
- Firefighting
- Emergency medical services
- Hazardous materials response
- Specialized rescue responses
The Saint Paul Fire Department contracts out for fire protection to 3M in Maplewood, the University of Minnesota Saint Paul campus, the State Fair grounds, the Veterans Administration Medical Center and surrounding areas. ALS service is provided to Falcon Heights and Lauderdale.
Fire District Chiefs
There are three fire districts within the City of Saint Paul and each district is supervised by a fire district chief. These individuals:
- Manage and control the operations of fire and medical companies in an assigned district
- Provide 24-hour supervision of eight to 10 fire companies and five to six fire stations within their district
- Are assigned a department project to coordinate and manage including:
- School fire drills
- Elevator inspections
- Hazardous materials coordinator
- Specialized rescue coordinator
- Target hazard commercial pre planning
- Community Outreach Events
There are two rescue squads that respond to all telephone alarms, each responsible for one half of the City. In the Firehouse 2002 national survey, the Fire Department's second District Chief was rated the 21st busiest chief in the country.
