SPPD involves our community in training

The Saint Paul Police Department formally and regularly incorporates community members in department training related to bias, race, mental health, sexual orientation, discrimination and economic status. The department boasts one of the most dedicated training agendas addressing bias in the state.

Task Status: Established Practice

5.2.1 The U.S. Department of Justice should conduct research to develop and disseminate a toolkit on how law enforcement agencies and training programs can integrate community members into this training process.

SPPD Note

Community engagement is a priority in academy training and continuing training for all Saint Paul sworn and civilian employees. New police recruits are exposed to formal programming in philanthropy, community meetings and community engagement to gain experience and cultural and community competence. It’s part of “the Saint Paul Way” of policing that involves and partners with members of the community at all stages.
