Introduction
Saint Paul Public Library (SPPL) is committed to creating accessible library spaces for our residents. ‘Accessibility’ means that people with physical impairments, sensory issues, language barriers, cognitive disabilities, who are blind, deaf or hard of hearing, etc. can use the library. This is a long-term, comprehensive project for all Saint Paul Public Library buildings. Though SPPL has long had a commitment to creating adaptive and accessibility improvements, this is the first time SPPL has created an ADA transition plan
This SPPL Accessibility Transition Plan aligns with the City's overarching accessibility framework through the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This plan specifically pertains to the public SPPL serves. One of the first steps SPPL took is a self-evaluation that focused on four parts of libraries: facilities, programs, services, and communication.
The self-evaluation helped us identify subcategories to improve accessibility at SPPL: Facilities; Programming; Marketing and Communications; Staff Training; Reference, Technology, and General Library Services; and Digital Accessibility. SPPL leaders in these subcategories identified goals to increase accessibility access for our patrons.
