The Saint Paul Police Department offers a limited number of unpaid internships opportunities throughout the calendar year. This program is designed for college-level students pursuing a career in law enforcement who are required to complete an internship as part of their academic curriculum.  

The structure and scope of each internship assignment are determined by the student's area of study, professional interests, and the operational needs of the Department. Interns may be assigned to various divisions and will be provided exposure to multiple aspects of departmental operations. Responsibilities may include administrative support, research assignments, community engagement assistance, and other duties consistent with the Department's mission and the intern's qualifications. 

The Internship Program is intended to provide meaningful educational experience and professional insight into the internal operations of a major metropolitan police department. 

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. 
  2. Applicants must be currently enrolled in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or a closely related field of study. 
  3. Applicants must successfully complete a criminal history background check.  A clear criminal record is required for eligibility. 

The Saint Paul Police Department can accommodate a maximum of 180 total internship hours per student. Applicants are responsible for confirming that this maximum hour limit meets the requirements of their academic institution prior to applying. 

Internship placements are limited and are filled on a first-come, first served basis.   

Saint Paul Police Intern Process

The Saint Paul Police Department offers internships for currently enrolled Law Enforcement students or Criminal Justice/Forensic majors throughout the year.  The purpose of the internship is to allow students an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in law enforcement and public safety services and further explore careers in the field.

The Saint Paul Police Department Internship program is unpaid and usually scheduled Monday - Friday, 8AM - 4PM.  However, there are occasional events and exceptions to these times.

To be considered for an internship with the Saint Paul Police Department, you should complete the following:

  2. When you apply, attach a letter to the Saint Paul Police Department, Community Engagement Unit, 367 Grove St, St Paul, Mn 55101 from your school Advisor or Department Head stating that you are required to complete an internship for school credits.  This letter should be written on letter head paper from your college and state how many hours are required to complete your internship.
  3. Be willing to submit to a background investigation.  This process may take up to 3 months.  All students should apply 3-4 months prior to the desired start date.
  4. The Community Engagement Unit will call you to schedule an interview if you meet the criteria.
