Law Enforcement Career Path Academy

The Saint Paul Police Department launched the Law Enforcement Career Path Academy to ensure that young adults who aspire to serve as peace officers have the resources they need to achieve their dreams. The path to becoming an officer is not easy. LECPA helps chart a course.

Path to Police Certification

Step 1:

Interested candidates must apply to attend three mandatory orientation training sessions to review the requirements of becoming a peace officer and undergo screening. To receive information, visit our application page and provide your contact information.

Step 2:

Top candidates are selected to participate in a ten week, entry-level skills certificate training—tuition free. This course will be offered in partnership with Century College, providing training in preparation for industry recognized credentials. Successful completion results in five college credits toward a law enforcement degree. Learn more by visiting the website of our program partner Century College.

Step 3:

Students who complete entry-level training receive assistance enrolling in a two-year, industry-recognized Professional Peace Officer Education degree program. This includes application assistance as well as support creating a financial plan for attendance. Learn more by visiting the information page for the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards.

Step 4:

Students can earn while they learn. Students who successfully enroll in a degree program are eligible to engage in a year of service as AmeriCorps members. Service members will earn a living stipend and an educational award, volunteering in the field while studying to obtain required industry skills certificates to become peace officers.

Program Eligibility

All interested applicants are encouraged to apply. Participation is aimed at adults between the ages of 18 to 24, who reside in Saint Paul or a surrounding community and come from a low-income family or face a barrier to employment.
