Overview
Since 1996, neighborhoods across Saint Paul have been improved through a street reconstruction program known as Saint Paul Streets.
Each year, the city improves 10 to 15 miles of unpaved and outdated streets. Visible improvements typically include bituminous pavement, boulevard trees, concrete curb and gutters, concrete driveway aprons and outwalks, lantern-style lighting, public art, and sodded boulevards.
Public and private utilities also update their facilities as part of the reconstruction process. This work typically includes:
- Public Works Sewer Division: Replacing sanitary sewers
- Saint Paul Regional Water Services: Replacing lead service connections and water mains
- Stormwater Management: Incorporating stormwater infrastructure into street improvements
- Xcel Energy: Upgrading gas facilities
Completing utility work as part of the street reconstruction process helps reduce long-term construction costs and disruptions for residents.
