Forestry removes tree stumps of publicly owned trees with either city crews or contractors. Typically, Forestry and contractors remove stumps by grinding them into wood chips, hauling the wood chips away, and back filling the hole with soil. This work is limited to the stump and some amount of surface roots extending from the stump if present. Please note, this process is not a full boulevard restoration. Stump grinding can only occur when the ground is thawed and no snow is present, but may be limited further by other weather restrictions.
Stumps are generally not removed immediately following tree removal. Stumps are planned for removal in the calendar year following the tree removal, but may be limited in a given year due to weather, contractor availability, or available budgets.
Reasons you might request stump removal:
- Your tree was removed more than a year ago and you believe the stump was missed.
- You have submitted a Boulevard Tree Permit to plant a new tree at your own expense and the desired planting site is still a stump.
