About Youth Hockey

NEW OFFERING FOR WINTER 2026-2027! Saint Paul Parks and Recreation is partnering with the Minnesota Wild Skate It Forward initiative to reintroduce recreational hockey at Phalen Recreation Center. The goal of the Skate It Forward program is to grow the game of hockey and expanding access and opportunities to encourage more kids to play hockey. Recreational youth hockey is geared for new or beginning level play and emphasizes having fun learning to skate, developing hockey skills, meeting new friends, and working as a team.

Equipment will be available, but we encourage bringing your own if you have it!

Registration period is September 1 – November 30.

Age Guidelines

Coed divisions will be offered for 9U, 11U and 13U.

The date used to determine a player's eligibility for a league is February 28 of the current season. For example, to play in 10U, a player cannot turn 11 on or before February 28 of the season they are playing.

Schedules

Typical schedule will be one practice and one hockey game per week. If enough players register to form a roster of 14 players or more, we will join the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Youth Rec Hockey league playing a 7-game regular season schedule followed by an end of season tournament pending ice availability. Games would be played January-February at various rink locations. Schedules will be posted before the start of the season.
