Overview

General sheet metal work is defined as gutters, flashing, metal chimneys, and architectural sheet metal work.

When Is a General Sheet Metal Permit Required?

A General Sheet Metal Permit is required when:

  • Installing new general sheet metal or replacing existing general sheet metal
  • General sheet metal work is being done on a residential property five units or larger*
  • General sheet metal work is being done on commercial property

*If the residential property has four units or less, a general sheet metal permit is not required. Owners who are performing the general sheet metal work themselves are responsible for obtaining the permit and complying with code requirements. If the owners have hired a contractor to do the general sheet metal work, the contractor is responsible for obtaining the permit and complying with code requirements.

Code Requirements

See Chapter 33 of the City of Saint Paul Legislative Code for information.
