Fire Safety and Property Maintenance Standards

Maintaining a current fire Certificate of Occupancy (CO) is critical to maintaining your property. A CO is a document stating the building or structure is habitable and suitable for how it is being used.

COs are required for one- and two-family residential buildings that are not owner-occupied, and in all apartment or multi-family and commercial buildings, in order for the buildings to be used. After each inspection, a property is assigned a letter grade that corresponds to the number of years before the next inspection is required. Different occupancies may need to be on a tighter schedule due to the perceived hazard level.

In addition, the City's property maintenance code sets standards related to how structures and properties are expected to be maintained.
